The John Rank Gallery
Approximate floor area 16.5m x 6.5m
Seating capacity 90 Cost: £500 (October to April inclusive) £675 (May to September inclusive). Prices per week.
Once a medieval church, the airy and spacious John Rank Gallery has a high barrel-vaulted ceiling and the etched windows provide a lot of natural light. It is ideal for concerts or lectures due to its excellent acoustics, and temporary events notices can be applied for to permit the sale of alcohol (private views where wine is provided to visitors without charge are exempt).
There is a modern hanging system requiring d-rings to be fitted to all pictures. There are also three sets of three moveable screens which can be used as dividers or in a triangular configuration to break up spaces or to increase the hanging space. In addition there are some 15 plinths of varying heights available for use, along with small sections of staging which make low platforms. Two glass cases (without locks) are also available for the display of small craft items.
The gallery can be hired as a whole for one or more weeks, or it is regularly divided into four smaller, more affordable spaces as follows:
1 The Majella Gallery
Overlooked by the magnificent Majella Taylor window and visible from the gallery entrance, this gallery incorporates the large end wall as one of its three hanging spaces, making it an excellent area for the display of larger works. The total hanging space is approx. 15m at full height and 1.2m at two thirds height.
2 The Middle Gallery
A more intimate studio space ideally suited to smaller size work or for pottery, glass and small sculpture. It is well placed for visitors to enjoy the work on view as they pass through the gallery. Using moveable screens to provide the side walls, this gallery has approx. 9.5m of full height hanging space.
3 The Curved Wall Gallery
Situated to the right as you enter the gallery and with a beautiful arched window lending additional light, this gallery utilises a 5m curved wall as well as two further display areas. The total hanging space for this gallery is approx. 9.5m at full height and 3m at half height.
4 The Long Wall Gallery
This gallery comprises the long wall on the left as you enter the gallery and is therefore visible to all visitors as they pass through the gallery. It is ideal for bigger works, and has hanging space of approx. 8m at full height and 4m at half height.
