Whispers of Japan
Davina Unwin – Contemporary artist (Red Lobster Studio)
Ako Danes-Taditional Japanese brush artist

Davina is passionate about Japanese art and history and studies artists from the Edo period. Her chosen medium is acrylic on canvas and her original work is over one and a half meters high by half a meter wide. She has taken from a old style of painting and added her very own contemporary flare, creating striking figurative pieces. Pattern excites her very much, she often mixes bold flamboyant fluid pattern with smaller repetitive ones to contrast amazingly. Each one of her paintings takes up to six weeks to complete and has perfected a technique in which she places many fine layers of paint upon the canvas to give a print like quality to the finish of her work.

Davina recently saw a show by The Midhurst Group of Artists at the Oxmarket and was taken with Ako’s work, she promptly got in contact and was honoured when Ako agreed exhibit along side her. Ako is a very talented traditional Japanese brush artist and her work is truly captivating. She uses complimentary calming watercolours upon rice paper to create the most beautifully delicate pictures. All her subjects reflect natures flora & fauna. Her works include flowers birds and fishes of all types within a variety of natural contexts.
